The making of global city regions2/20/2024 ![]() ![]() The economy it was responsible to integrate the population but also to reinforce the social differences that the racial segregation caused. The history of Johannesburg is most known by the racial segregation, which created a spatial segregation. In early twenty-first century, some academic publications started to fill the gap. There is a lack of publications about the city. These different names represent the presence of a multicultural people is also interesting to note that English is not a language speaks by the majority. ![]() Johannesburg is the name known worldwide, but is interesting to note that there are other names, as Gauting, that also the name of the province, Jozi, Egoli and Joburg, that is the name present in the official documents. Johannesburg it is a city that it is the center of a great and varied region with a population about 9 million people. ![]() This reading note will focus on the city region of Johannesburg. The book was edited by Klaus Segber, professor of political science and international relations at the Free University Berlin. The book presents us four city regions: Johannesburg, Mumbai/Bombay, São Paulo and Shanghai in four points of view with different scientific angles: City Regions between Their Legacies and the Global Context, Who Runs the City? The "Makers" of Global City Regions and Contested Future: Discourses and Images in City Region. The book is results of a research project which the objective is fulfill the lack of projects and books about the city regions, especially in south hemisphere. ![]()
